“Fight” (3’x3’ spray paint/acrylic marker) new piece created for a cool opportunity I have coming up. Story behind this is, I had a small window of time to get it done + no ideas 😬 Clock was ticking first thing this morning & before I put marker to canvas, something just irked me - one of those silly little things that burrows it’s way into your head that you can’t shake. Yesterday I got to hang out with 400+ Durham Integrated Arts Campers (@diac_DDSB & @ddsbschools) @campwhitepineofficial! 🖤🏕️These incredible kids brought the heat for 90 minutes, as I spoke about my career & what I call the “4 Anchors” ⚓️ 4 thoughts, actions, behaviours that have helped guide me in work & life. “Love…Madly”, “To Lose Is To Learn”, “Quiet The Voices”, “No Regrets (…and don’t forget the fun 🤩). I invited 4 volunteers from the group to help me create a live canvas centered around these anchors & their own experiences, goals & dreams. HAPPY 30th ANNIVERSARY to the @artschoolofptbo !! ❤️ Thank you for having me out last night @themountcommunitycentre to do some live drawing incorporating finger prints of attendees + celebrate this incredible milestone. The school holds a really special place in my heart. After graduating art school in 2001, & returning back home, searching everywhere for opportunities to make some $$ in the arts, I approached Richard Hayman, founder of the school. I walked through the Art school doors for the very first time, and presented Richard with a Christmas card I had made. It was Santa bending over to pick up gifts, and once you folded the card down, it revealed St. Nick’s bare ass, 🍑 🎅 and the card read “I hope your holidays are full of surprises”. Richard looked at me, smiled, and said… “you’re hired young man”. I spent the next 15 years teaching adult & kid’s programming & serving on the board of directors, before going out on my own. Richard passed away a decade later, but his legacy lives on with ED Jenni Johnston at the helm. Listen, I’d be lying if I said I’ve never thought about just getting a regular job. Those thoughts sneak in there about everything 2nd day because that’s how up & down it is being a freelance artist. They wanted an inviting & colourful space for staff to walk up to as they begin their day. Thinking a lot lately about personal growth, and how sometimes the best things are born from really shitty circumstances. This is me 6 months into pandemic times (October 2020) where uncertainty and fear were palpable .. (and I decided wearing a beanie was a good fashion choice 😝) I got an email from @kawarthafoodshare, like fu@&ing pure oxygen, that I’m pretty sure saved my business and my sanity. It was also a gateway into new creative territory, and I remember going from feeling completely powerless, to “LET’S FU@%’N GO!” Almost immediately - reaching new heights (literally), in the darkest of times. I’ve experienced a few of these moments since, and what I can tell you is while you think you can’t take anymore - teetering on the edge - resilience becomes an ally. The scary isn’t quite as scary, and the light isn’t as dim as it first appeared. Moral of the rant: Keep going, trust in your abilities, and maybe even trust that there is plan you’re not mean to see just yet. ALSO, the inclination will be to give up as things get harder, but you must force yourself to move (even if it’s slight) during these times, because the good will come back around, and you need to be at your best when that inevitably happens.
