I talk a lot about following your passions. Like, a lot, and it may seem a bit overkill, but it’s way too easy to forget & to become complacent. Last Saturday, I kicked off my 4th session teaching virtual art classes with @autismontario from the @jwilkinsfactory ❤️🤗 The first class is all about breaking the ice, sharing ideas, and sparking creativity. I shared a video where I talk about my journey as an artist, and how I imagined having an “invisible friend” on my shoulder, guiding me through the highs and lows of chasing my dream. I then invited the kids to create their own character—someone or something that could help them navigate tough times. I encouraged them to draw inspiration from their favorite things, emotions, and experiences. As always, their creativity and talent blew me away! 🤯 You can hear snippets of my video audio here, along with my own silly take on what my character might look like—a quirky mix of pasta, art, weights, and a body that’s vaguely Slimer-esque from Ghostbusters. 😂 I’m so grateful for the time I get to spend with these kids. Terrified of heights) Client: “You can duplicate a logo on a water tower?” Me: “no problem” I spent the next 5 weeks painting the Town of Penetanguishene water tower 100 feet in the air in high winds on a swinging scaffold. This was my first decent job as a freelancer since quitting more “stable” employment after almost a decade. Little did I know the mural gig would set the tone for the coming few years personally and professionally. Lots of high winds, fears of falling, shaken confidence. A nice post from a few years back. ❤️ “…you hope that your kids will see what lights you up, and that they’ll seek that out too.” #Repost @artofwilkins ・・・ My youngest daughter Callie, who’s 7 going on 15, is the furthest thing from shy about pointing out my shortcomings. It’s pretty damn hilarious & accurate (87% of the time 😑) She recently wrote a school report where her mom got a really nice flattering description. Mine said “my Dad is 1)bald 2)smelly 3)old” Smelly hurt a bit. But by far my favourite observation to date came along casually in conversation a few months ago. “Hey Dad?” “Ya Babe?” “…why are you only smart at the studio?” And It immediately sent us into hysterics, but it also took me back a bit & made me realize how much she’s watching. Honestly though it’s not hard to miss. I can’t fix or build anything, my laundry cleaning abilities are sub-par 🫤 & my knowledge of car maintenance is limited to filling up washer fluid (although I did change wiper blades the other day 😏). But when I walk into the studio, I know myself so well, and become a different person. Things are second nature. Art is who I am to the core. And Callie sees that, and recognizes that’s Dad’s arena. Leaning fully into who you are authentically isn’t just powerful for you, it has this ripple effect to those around you. By building on your passions and strengths, you’ll hone those skills, you’re confidence will grow, and you’ll start positively impacting how you function in other areas of your life. You’re interactions with people will be warmer, you’ll be less afraid to try new things, and best of all your daughter will call you “smart” - and you hope that your kids will see what lights you up, and that they’ll seek that out too. Like most of us at this age, also blissfully unaware of what goodies life has in store for us in the years ahead. 🫠 But to that I’d say to 14 year old me… a) invest in a thing called “Facebook” B) The tough times will make you. I’d then give him a glimpse into 2024, where I had some bumps in the road, but also had some major successes, completing a combined 72 projects from murals, illustration, speaking engagements & live event drawing, to a dream job creating a 40th anniversary world-wide release piece for @paramountpics Ninja Turtles 🐢! … you’ll have to hang in for 43 years, but it’ll be yours. I’m not much for New Year’s resolutions. We make false promises to ourselves with very little follow through, because the second we don’t see results we give up. I’m a huge believer in consistency being key in achieving. Consistency being small steps over long periods of time - most importantly through the tough times, on a daily, hourly, minute by minute basis - when most would fold. This is the #1 piece of advice I’d give this handsome devil 👆Take your time - enjoy the bumps because they never ever go away. They are as important, if not more important than your successes. Wow, I’ve been waiting a full year to share this news (very tight NDA lol), and the time has arrived! 🤯 Coming up as an artist, these are the moments you dream of, and if you’re lucky they actually come true. Late last year I was approached by Paramount Worldwide (which, at first I thought was some kind of horrible prank) to create a piece celebrating (@tmnt ) The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 40th anniversary. Spent this fine Wednesday finishing up this bay door mural mock-up for @kateltoms.fit to inspire her clients to get after it & become the best versions of themselves through her private workout sessions 💪 ❤️. I wanted to give more of a peak behind the curtain of my mockup process because it’s definitely where the bulk of the work happens. When I’m hired on to a mural project, I’m actually creating 2 complete pieces - one hi-res digital piece, which gives the client a very clear picture how the actual mural will look (aside from some spur of the moment things that happen as I’m in the zone). You can see during the time-lapse I’m constantly referencing Kate’s wish list of things she wanted to see in the art. After creating digital work for almost a decade now, I still find it amazing! This would’ve seemed like Star Trek stuff in 2001 when I graduated art school.
